Breaking Silences is a grassroots disability advocacy group in Ohio dedicated to fostering a culture of accessibility and inclusion across our communities.
The mission of Breaking Silences is to create an active space where advocates work together to build community awareness and drive meaningful change in the places where we live, work, and participate.
The Breaking Silences Accommodations Subcommittee was established to advance statewide awareness of accessibility needs and to address the ongoing lack of accommodations for Ohioans with disabilities. Barriers to access limit full participation in community life. When accessibility is intentionally integrated into building design, meetings, digital spaces, public testimony, and events, everyone benefits from broader participation and diverse perspectives. Centering our voices in planning and decision-making ensures that no one is excluded due to preventable barriers.
We believe Ohio can lead the way by exceeding the minimum standards outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act. Designing with disability in mind benefits all people. As the largest minority group in the United States, individuals with disabilities bring vital insight to policy development, problem-solving, and community growth. Everyone deserves a seat at the table.
Access and Accommodations: All Breaking Silences Accommodations Subcommittee meetings have Zoom captioning. C-Print Captioning and ASL interpreters are available upon request for any meeting.
