The Access Center for Independent Living (ACIL) opened in 1984, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s that the Recycled Equipment Donated for Independence (REDI) program put our organization on the map.
Named for its purpose, REDI is a program through which ACIL gives donated gently used durable medical equipment to those in need in hopes of helping people become more independent and able to live life to the fullest in the community of their choice.
While it started out as a project on which many agencies were collaborating, ACIL took the lead and REDI eventually became exclusive to the Center. In its early years, REDI led to a beautiful partnership with Miami Valley Hospital (MVH). MVH allowed us to store gently used durable medical equipment when we did not have the space to do so. Now, thirty years later, REDI is still one of ACIL’s most popular programs. In 2022, ACIL received a grant from City Commission of Dayton that expanded the REDI program and allowed for the purchase of a permanent office building complete with a warehouse to hold equipment donations.
ACIL most often gets requests for rollator walkers, lift chairs, and hospital beds but we have all kinds of equipment available to help consumers, especially now that we have expanded the program at our permanent location. In addition to durable medical equipment, REDI offers incontinence supplies such as diapers and chuck pads to consumers and their families.
Donations of durable medical equipment keep the REDI program afloat. ACIL can accept donations from various sources including private citizens, nursing homes, independent living facilities, and rehabilitation facilities. All donations are tax deductible. Donation receipts are available on request.
While ACIL is happy to accept donations on any type of gently used durable medical equipment any time between 9:00a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, we are currently low are certain types of equipment including regular and bariatric size wheelchairs and rollators walkers as well as shower chairs and benches so, we are specifically seeking those types of donations.
ACIL does not currently have the equipment or staffing needed to assist consumers and their families with delivery of durable medical equipment and/or other donations to or from the REDI program but would love to be able to do so in the future if we can find volunteers who are willing and able to assist.
Whether you need medical equipment or have something to donate, you can make an appointment with REDI Monday through Friday during the hours listed above. Make an appointment by calling 937-341-5202 Ext 104 and asking for, REDI Program Manager, Jeff Allen or by emailing [email protected].
