Do you believe that people with disabilities should have full and complete access to their local communities? The Access Center for Independent Living (ACIL) was founded in 1984 on that very principle. Roland Skyes, Roy Poston, and Roger Flint collectively known as the “Rolling R’s” founded ACIL with the vision of affecting change that would make the community accessible to any person with a disability who wished to pursue a more independent, self-directed lifestyle. Now, 40 years later, ACIL has helped thousands of consumers achieve independence, changed the way local communities view disability, and continued to carry out the mission to ensure that people with disabilities have full and complete access to the community in which they reside. We want to celebrate our 40 years of service by having people come to the center to get a glimpse of our roots, witness the work we are currently doing, and hear our plans for the future. We need your help to make it happen!

ACIL will be hosting a 40th anniversary celebration open house on Thursday, August 22nd from 12pm to 4pm. The celebration will take place at our office at 165 East Helena Street Dayton, Ohio, 45404. There will be opportunities to meet ACIL staff and hear about the services we offer. We are hopeful that information about disability services and supports offered by some of our community partners will also be available. Lastly, we plan to develop a 40th Anniversary celebration commemorative program detailing the history, achievements, and current work of ACIL to give to each attendee. We are seeking the support of local communities to help make our 40th Anniversary Celebration Open House a success.

One notable achievement of ACIL is the creation of our Think This Is Easy (TTIE) disability awareness training. TTIE is an in-person, immersive experience perfect for service providers working with individuals with disabilities or anyone curious about the challenges and barriers faced by those with disabilities. The training consists of activities simulating various types of disabilities including cognitive, visual, speech, hearing, dexterity and mobility. Several people who have gone TTIE training have called it “eye-opening” and have referred to ACIL staff as “very knowledgeable.” Interested in going through TTIE? Come to the open house to find out more about it.

If you believe in the mission of ACIL and would like to help celebrate our years of service to local communities, please consider sponsoring our 40th Anniversary Celebration Open House. Sincerely,

The ACIL Staff
