Meet Christopher Rutledge, Director of Programs at the Access Center for Independent Living (ACIL).

While he is new to working with people with disabilities, Christopher’s passion for advocacy and his commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of others make him a wonderful fit for the Director of Programs position. His mission-driven approach to leading others and years of non-profit experience will undoubtedly allow him to steer programs that help people with disabilities thrive for years to come.

Christopher’s journey to ACIL began with a simple, yet profound, desire: to have a positive impact on the surrounding communities.

“I applied to ACIL because I wanted to find a way to contribute toward addressing social issues, particularly those related to mental health,” he explained.

His experience in the nonprofit sector has equipped him with the skills and insight necessary to navigate the complexities of program development, community engagement, and advocacy.

Christopher believes that understanding the unique challenges faced by the disability community is essential to shaping effective programs.

“I know I have a lot to learn, but I’m eager to engage with community members to enhance our initiatives,” he said.

When he received the offer for the role of Director of Programs, his emotions were a mix of excitement, pride, and a sense of responsibility.

“It’s a major milestone in my career to be entrusted with such a leadership position. It reflects not only my skills but also the dedication I bring to driving ACIL’s mission forward,” he remarked.

As part of his multifaceted role, Christopher oversees various duties essential to the success of ACIL’s programs. From program development and strategic leadership to compliance and advocacy, he works diligently to ensure the organization meets regulatory requirements while delivering impactful services.

“My favorite aspect of the position is advocacy and outreach. I love representing ACIL at community events and meetings where I can promote independent living initiatives,” he said.

However, the role is not without its challenges. Christopher cites the ongoing need for funding and resources as a significant hurdle.

“Securing grants and managing deliverables can be quite demanding, especially in a sector where funding can be unpredictable,” he admitted.

Even though his role can be demanding, Christopher’s unwavering passion for mental health advocacy shines through.

“I believe it’s crucial to raise awareness of mental health issues and ensure that they remain on the national agenda,” he asserted. “Advocacy can lead to meaningful improvements in policy and service development.”

Outside of his professional commitments, Christopher enjoys staying physically active with his family by going to parks and activity centers, like Scene 75, when he has free time. He is a proud father to two children, Adriana and Christopher Rutledge Jr., and a dedicated family member, sharing a close bond with his two brothers and one sister.

Many people may not know that Christopher played football for the Arena Football League (AFL), a testament to his commitment to teamwork and discipline.

“I think my experience in the AFL shaped my approach to interacting and collaborating with others because it taught me to lead by example,” he reflected.

As Christopher embarks on this new chapter at ACIL, his enthusiasm for making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities is evident.

“In a nonprofit setting, you have the opportunity to see the real impact of your work,” he remarked. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that I am part of a mission that changes lives for the better.”

With leaders like Christopher at the helm, ACIL is well-positioned to champion the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities, paving the way for a future where having the ability to thrive is a reality for all. As he looks forward to the journey ahead, Christopher invites the community to engage, collaborate, and advocate alongside him and our entire organization.

“Together, we can create a more inclusive community for everyone,” he said.
