Meet Allison Boot, a newly-hired independent Living Specialist at the Access Center for Independent Living. Allison worked at ACIL years ago and is excited to be back here working again. When asked why she decided to come back she answered, “I am the current Ms. Wheelchair Ohio. I have some amazing experiences as a statewide titleholder including testifying to two different legislative bodies regarding the state budget, the importance of home and community-based services, and why more funding is needed to the address the current home health crisis. Speaking about the importance of advocacy and inclusion helped me to realize just how much I need and want to help others develop their voices as advocates. I am happy to have the opportunity to do so as an IL Specialist at ACIL.”

Allison’s advocacy platform as Ms. Wheelchair Ohio 2023 is READ for Equity. As a four-time self-published author she knows that inclusive literature geared toward young people can encourage them to Raise awareness, Embrace differences, Advocate for acceptance and Dream big. She is a proponent of the fact that people with disabilities do not need to be cured or overcome our limitations; we can live equitable lives with our disabilities. Her platform is dedicated to demonstrating that by encouraging people to READ through not only inclusive literature but also other media, life can become more equitable for people with disabilities. “I chose this platform because I want people to know that a life with a disability is a life worth living. I am excited to help people to see that a life with a disability can be a full and happy life with assisting them with acquiring and refining independent living skills,” Allison explained.

Allison’s commitment to her craft is evident in her academic achievements. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Mass Communication from the University of Dayton. Her dedication to her work is also reflected in her personal interests, such as her extensive collection of troll dolls. She began collecting these dolls at the age of three after being told that they bring good luck, and her collection continues to grow to this day.

Despite her busy schedule, Allison remains devoted to her family. She cherishes her role as a daughter to two parents, a sister to eleven siblings, and an auntie to thirteen nieces and nephews. However, her most cherished roles are those of being a loving wife and a dog mom.
