Are you a resident of Dayton or a surrounding community with a disability? Would you like to share issues you’ve experienced locally with policymakers? Come to the Town Hall on September 11th.

As you may not know, there are 12 Centers for Independent Living (CILs) in Ohio. Disability Rights Ohio (DRO), a nonprofit with the mission to advocate for an equitable Ohio for people with disabilities, is partnering with each CIL in Ohio in 2024 to host a town hall to give people with disabilities the opportunity to speak to and share their experiences with local policymakers.

The town hall that DRO is partnering with ACIL will consist of a panel of 3 to 4 advocates who will discuss disability issues such as the ongoing homecare crisis and issues surrounding local public transit before opening the discussion to attendees. A DRO staff member will serve as moderator of the discussion.

Several policymakers have been invited to participate in the town hall. Dayton Commissioners, Carolyn Rice and Shenice Turner-Sloss have confirmed that they will be in attendance. The mayor of Dayton, Jeffrey Mims Jr., may also attend. There is also a possibility that a representative from the office of Congressman Mike Turner will also participate in the event.

ACIL and DRO are asking anyone who attends the town hall to please bring a mask to ensure the comfort of all attendees in consideration of the upcoming cold and flu season. Additionally, please refrain from wearing scented perfumes and lotions to ensure that the town hall is enjoyable for those who have chemical sensitivities and/or respiratory conditions.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and captioning services will be available during the town hall. Anyone who needs additional accommodations to be able to fully participate in the event should request these accommodations when filling out the registration form.

The town hall will be held on Wednesday, September 11th from 2pm to 4pm in the Large Theater Room of the Dayton Metro Library at 215 E 3rd Street, Dayton, OH 45402.
