Empowering Change: ACIL Board Member Recruitment Now Open

Are you someone who is passionate about creating a more inclusive society for all? Consider helping lead the effort to make Dayton and surrounding communities more inclusive by applying to be on the board of the Access Center for Independent Living (ACIL).

The primary role of ACIL’s Board is to provide strategic direction and oversight for the organization, ensuring that our vision, mission, and values are at the forefront of our operations. Board members review financial reports, discuss operational updates, and have the opportunity to contribute to decisions that shape the future of ACIL.

“The Board plays a crucial role in guiding our organization,” emphasized Jeremy Caffee, Executive Director of ACIL. “We are looking for passionate individuals who are committed to our mission and who can bring their unique perspectives and expertise to the table.”

ACIL’s board typically meets every two months on the third Thursday of the month. Meetings, which last between one to two hours, generally occur in person at the ACIL conference room. However, the board transitions to virtual meetings via Zoom during the winter months to prioritize member safety.

Currently, there are three openings on the board. ACIL is eager to fill these vacancies with individuals who not only understand the needs of the community but also possess the skills to navigate the complexities of governance. Specifically, the organization is looking for candidates with a financial or development background, as well as a commitment to the mission and vision of ACIL.

“Having board members with accounting expertise is essential for us to maintain compliance and ensure the financial integrity of our organization,” Jeremy remarked. “We’re not just filling positions; we’re looking for advocates who can help us make impactful changes in the community.”

The qualifications for prospective board members include a requirement that at least 51% of the board must have a disability, aligning with ACIL’s commitment to represent the voices of those it serves. Although it is preferred that candidates have expertise in areas such as finance, fundraising, or legal matters, the most important qualities include a willingness to engage in board meetings and participate in ACIL events.

The board values attendance and encourages members to notify the organization in advance if they are unable to attend a meeting. ACIL acknowledges that life can be unpredictable, offering a hybrid meeting option for members who wish to participate virtually.

Applying to be an ACIL Board member involves an initial meeting with Jeremy followed by an interview with existing board members during a meeting. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, allowing flexibility for interested candidates to seize this opportunity at their convenience.

ACIL allows and encourages board members to serve multiple terms as we strive for dedication and continuity in leadership. Participation in board meetings is just one aspect of being a member; members may also engage in various ACIL events and committees, further amplifying their impact on the organization and the communities we serve.
